Lights, audioand cameras.

Most people add these a while after they've bought the car: a dash camera, an Android screen, parking sensors, a better set of speakers. Nearly all of them mean taking trim panels off so the cables can run behind them, then clipping the panels back on. It helps to know what your car came with from the factory, because a screen or camera that's already there changes what can be added and how.

What goes inand where

Some of these mean drilling into the bumper or a trim panel, so we'll go over the car with you first and show you where.

01

Ambient lighting

Thin LED strips are pushed into the seams along the dash and door panels, and sometimes into the footwells, with the strip tucked behind the edge of the trim. Most kits change colour from a remote or a phone app. A line of light also makes scratches and fading on the panel next to it easier to see, so worn trim is worth cleaning up or replacing first.

02

Dash cameras

The camera usually goes high on the windshield behind the rear-view mirror, out of your line of sight, and some kits come with a second camera for the rear glass. Its cable runs under the edge of the roof liner and down the pillar trim, then gets wired to the fuse box or plugged into the power socket. Memory cards wear out, so check now and then that it's still saving footage.

03

Android infotainment systems

The factory stereo comes out and an Android touchscreen goes into the same slot, usually in a frame made for that model. On some cars the steering wheel buttons or the climate controls work through the old stereo, and whether they keep working afterwards depends on the car. Once it's in, you can use it for maps and music, and it can show a reverse camera.

04

Reverse camera and 360° camera

A reverse camera sits near the number plate and puts the view behind the car on the dash screen as soon as you select reverse, so a car without a screen needs one fitted as well. A 360° system adds cameras at the front and under both mirrors. It combines the pictures into one view from above, and it has to be calibrated after fitting so they line up where they meet.

05

Parking sensors

Each sensor sits in a hole drilled through the bumper, and a buzzer inside the car beeps faster as you get closer to a wall or another car. They can still miss a thin pole or a low kerb. If the bumper already has paint protection film, the film gets cut at every hole, so when you're planning both it's better to fit the sensors before the film goes on.

06

Car audio upgrades

An upgrade usually starts with the door speakers and can go on to tweeters up on the dash and an amplifier under a seat or in the boot. While the door panels are off, the inside of each door can be lined with damping sheet. It cuts down rattles at high volume and takes out a little road noise too. How far it's worth going depends on what you listen to and how loud you like it.

Booking afitting

By appointment

Call or WhatsApp us to fix a time. That way the bench is free when you arrive, and we already know the car and what you'd like fitted.

How long it takes

It depends on the job and the car, so we'll give you a time once we've seen it and tell you straight away if anything is going to run longer.

Already fitted

If a dealer or an earlier owner has already added wiring, a camera or a screen, mention it when you call, because old installs sometimes have to come out before the new part can go in.

Before you ask

What ownersask us

Will it affect my car's warranty?

It can. If the dealer decides that added wiring caused an electrical fault, they may refuse to cover that repair, so ask your service centre what they allow before booking anything with us.

Do you have to cut into the car's wiring?

On some cars the new part plugs into the existing connectors through an adapter lead, and on others it has to be spliced into a wire. If you'd rather nothing gets cut, say so early, since that can rule out certain parts for your car.

Can a dash camera drain the battery?

If it's set to record while the car is parked, it draws a little power the whole time, and on a car that isn't driven much that can leave the battery flat. Most hardwiring kits switch the camera off when the battery runs low. Let us know how often the car gets driven before it's wired in.

Can the car go back to how it was?

Speakers, screens and lighting can all come out again, and the factory parts go back in as long as you've kept them. Holes drilled for parking sensors stay in the bumper, though, along with any hole made for a camera.
